How to Check Your Income Tax Refund Status and Previous Year's Refund Amount Online (2026 Guide)

Don't worry. The Income Tax Department allows taxpayers to check the refund amount of previous assessment years online through the official Income Tax e-Filing portal.

In this guide, you'll learn how to check your previous year's Income Tax refund amount step by step.


Step 1: Visit the Income Tax e-Filing Portal

Open your browser and visit the official Income Tax e-Filing website.

Step 2: Log in to Your Account

Click Login.

Enter:

·        PAN Number

·        Password  

Click Continue.


Step 3: Open "e-File"

After logging in,

Go to  e-File → Income Tax Returns → View Filed Returns

This section contains all the Income Tax Returns you have filed.


Step 4: Select the Assessment Year

You'll see a list of assessment years such as:

·        AY 2025-26

·        AY 2024-25

·        AY 2023-24

·        AY 2022-23

Choose the assessment year whose refund you want to check.


Step 5: View Refund Details

Click View Details.

You can now see:

·        Return Filing Date

·        Processing Status

·        Refund Amount

·        Refund Issue Date

·        Mode of Refund

·        Bank Account credited

·        Intimation under Section 143(1)

If a refund has been issued, the exact amount will be displayed.


Step 6: Download the Intimation

You can also download the Income Tax Intimation PDF.

This document contains:

·        Total Tax Paid

·        Tax Liability

·        Refund Amount

·        Interest (if any)

·        Final Calculation

It serves as proof of your refund.

You can also check your refund status by navigating to:

Services → Refund Reissue / Refund Status

Here you can see:

·        Refund Issued

·        Refund Failed

·        Refund Under Process

·         Refund Returned


What If No Refund Is Showing?

Possible reasons include:

·        Return has not yet been processed.

·        Refund has already been adjusted against outstanding tax demand.

·        Bank account validation failed.

·        Incorrect bank account details.

·        Return was filed without any refund due.
